Important Information for Volunteers

  •  This is a volunteer placement program, not a holiday safari.
  • Volunteers are expected to actively participate in community projects.

OUR VOLUNTEERING PROGRAMS

HEALTH CARE / MEDICAL OUTREACH

Hospitals and clinics located around our orphanage, lack adequate staff and resources. Lights Of Kazinga collaborates with local hospitals and clinics to provide volunteers who have a strong passion for helping others and a willingness to dedicate their time and energy to those without easy-access to medical facilities. Participating in the healthcare volunteer project with Lights Of Kazinga opens tremendous opportunities for volunteers/travelers to experience new opportunities in their lives and careers. Volunteers have the unique chance to immerse themselves into another culture while making a positive contribution to the community where the need is the greatest.

AGRICULTURE OUTREACH

Volunteering in agriculture in Uganda can be a very rewarding way to contribute to food security, sustainable development, and local communities. Volunteers work alongside local farmers to help with planting, caring for animals, and harvesting crops. Volunteers also learn about organic farming, food security, and environmental protection.

    Welcome to Lights of Kazinga. We appreciate your willingness to support our children and community. This briefing explains your role, responsibilities, and guidelines to ensure a safe, respectful, and meaningful volunteering experience.

1. Purpose of Volunteering

Volunteering at Lights of Kazinga is about supporting, not replacing, local caregivers and teachers. Your role is to assist, share skills, and contribute positively while respecting local systems and child welfare standards.

2. Volunteer Roles & Activities

Depending on your skills and schedule, activities may include:

  • Assisting with teaching or learning support
  • Helping with childcare activities under supervision
  • Supporting daily routines (cleaning, organizing, cooking support)
  • Community activities or skills sharing

All activities are assigned by the coordinator.

Volunteers are not allowed to create their own programs or activities without approval.

3. Child Protection Policy

The safety and dignity of children come first.

Volunteers MUST:

✔ Interact with children only in open, shared spaces
✔ Be supervised during activities
✔ Treat all children with respect and equality

Volunteers MUST NOT:

❌ Be alone with a child
❌ Take children off-site or into private rooms
❌ Take photos/videos without permission
❌ Give money, gifts, sweets, or promises
❌ Share personal contact details with children

Failure to follow these rules may result in immediate termination of volunteering.

4. Photography & Social Media

  • Photos or videos of children require staff approval
  • Avoid sharing identifiable images of children online
  • Do not use children’s stories for fundraising or content without permission

Respect privacy and dignity at all times.

5. Cultural Respect & Conduct

  • Dress modestly, especially around children and in the community
  • Use respectful language and behavior
  • Avoid sensitive topics unless guided by staff
  • Be patient and open-minded

    Remember: you are a guest in the community.

6. Working Hours & Schedule

  • Volunteer hours will be agreed upon at check-in
  • Punctuality and consistency are expected
  • Inform staff in advance if you cannot attend

7. Health, Safety & Boundaries

  • Inform the coordinator of any health conditions
  • Do not administer medication to children
  • Report any concerns immediately to staff
  • Follow safety instructions at all times

8. Donations & Support

If you wish to support the orphanage:

  • Speak to the coordinator first
  • Donations must go through official channels
  • Do not give directly to children

9. Communication & Concerns

    Please speak directly and promptly with the coordinator. Open communication is encouraged.

At the end of your stay:
