WELCOME TO LIGHTS OF KAZINGA HOMESTAY

It is small in size, but gigantic when compared to the achievement it represents. Its three bright green and yellow floors, its meadow surroundings, its little straw and wooden tables and benches. The new Lights of Kazinga homestay, The “orphan’s hotel”, is the oasis in the middle of a desert of poverty and lack of opportunity. A new sky, where children’s laughter now shines everywhere.

The treasure of that future that will not be denied to them, like millions on the African continent, because it opens for them, as does the door of this modest homestay. 

It provides 6 ensuite rooms with both private toilet and bath room which can take up to 12 people. The homestay is mainly there to provide a confortable accommodation to our volunteers as they offer volunteer services to the orphans, neighbouring communities.

Located near the Queen Elizabeth National Park, 10 Minutes drive to kyambura gorge for chimpanzee tracking experience, 20 minutes drive to the main gate of Queen Elizabeth Np for safari experience, 15 minutes to the boat cruise point, 20 minutes drive to kalinzu forest for chimpanzee trekking, 10 minutes drive to the top of twin lakes, 3 hours drive to ishasha sector of queen elizabeth NP famous for the tree lions, 4 hours drive to Bwindi impenetrable forest Buhoma sector for gorilla trekking experience, 3 hours drive to kibale forest NP for chimpanzee trekking.

HOW TO FIND US

The lodge can be accessed through Kampala -Mbarara highway, as one head further south to Bushenyi, and Ishaka driving through the scenic tea plantations then later entering Kyambura town, just you enter Kyambura town take first marum road turning on the right drive 100 meters, then turn right after the first fuel pump and proceed for 50 meters to the homestay.(distance approximately 378km (6-7 hours).

The lodge can also be accessed through Kampala – Fort portal highway, then proceed to Kasese to Kazinga Channel and enter Kyambura town, just as you enter Kyambura town take your first marum road turning on the left drive 100 meters, then turn right after the first fuel pump and proceed for 50 meters to the homestay (distance approximately 420km (7-8 hours).

BOAT CRUISES

Whether volunteering with us or staying with us, we help you in booking a boat safari on the famous kazinga channel as we are just 10 minutes drive from the boat cruise starting point.

While on the boat cruise, you will be able to see animals like Elephants, buffaloes, crocs, and much more animals plus a coctail of birds.

CHIMPANZEE TREKKING

Our homestay is very well located in that its very close to 3 locations where chimpanzee trekking is done in Uganda; Kalinzu forest which is just 20 minutes drive to the gate, Kyambura gorge which is 5 minutes to the gate and kibale forest which is 2 hours drive to the gate of the park. TWIN LAKES HIKE

We are located in a region where there are over 50 crater lakes, its very easy to access from our homestay. On your free day while at the orphanage homestay, you will be able to get to know about the community life with a village walk going through plantations such as coffee plantations, banana plantations and much more. The walk will then end with a hike to the top of twin lakes where you will be able to take endless views of the queen Elizabeth National park and the twin lakes. Still we help you have this explored as you volunteer with us.

COOKING COURSES

At Lights of Kazinga Homestay, you can learn how to cook traditional dishes. Wander through our gardens, pick and dig your choice of vegetables and herbs then set to work with the chef in our kitchen.

Kalo Bread from locally grown millet.  You will use a milling stone to make the flour for the bread yourself; G-nut (groundnut) sauce – the favourite pink sauce found all over Uganda; Matoke (green banana) – prepare it, wrap it and watch it cook on the fire; Goat’s meat roasted then boiled; Irish potatoes (Imonda) and the local drink, Obushera, made from sorghum, millet, honey and water.

SALT MINING EXPERIENCE

On your volunteering program, you will have a chance to visit the salt lakes around us. Lake Katwe is one of them known for salt production. It is found in Kasese District in south western of Uganda and boarded by Queen Elizabeth National Park. This Lake was formed by volcanic eruption around 10,000 years ago.

Geographically, Lake Katwe is located within an explosion crater. In the formerly active volcanic area north-east of Lake Edward and south-east of Lake George. This lake is the chief producer of salt in Uganda.

The crater ground is divided into small ponds, for salt production. Rock salt activity and salt winning are the two mining activities at the lake. Rock salt activity is carried out in the main lake by only men whereas salt winning is carried out in the salt pans by both sexes.

BICYCLE CYCLYING

There are many attractions around our volunteering homestay, you can have access to them as you cycle around. The famous crater lakes of this region can all be accessed by cycling, lake katwe where salt mining is done from, kalinzu forest where chimpanzee trekking is done from, Queen Elizabeth National Park for safaris and boat cruise.

CULTURAL DANCE

while at the Orphanage, you will have some nice monuments with the kids as they perform the local traditional dance. You can definitely join them as a way to interact and feel the kids happiness. You have a reason to choose us for your volunteering time around Africa.
